Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy treats your inner world as made up of different parts, each with its own role. Here's what IFS is, how it works, and who it might help.
Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a therapeutic approach that understands the mind as made up of different “parts” — for example, a part that's harshly self-critical, a part that's anxious and on alert, and a part that's tired and wants to withdraw. Rather than treating these parts as problems to eliminate, IFS approaches each one with curiosity, on the idea that every part developed for a reason, usually to protect you in some way. Underneath these parts, IFS holds that there's a core “Self” — calm, curious, and compassionate — that's always present, even when it's hard to access.
In an IFS session, your therapist helps you notice and get curious about whatever part of your inner experience is most active — without judging it or trying to immediately fix it. You might explore what a critical inner voice is trying to protect you from, or what a part that avoids conflict is afraid would happen if it stopped. This process moves at your pace and is meant to feel collaborative rather than confrontational, since the goal is understanding your inner world, not fighting against parts of yourself.
IFS is often used alongside other approaches, like EFT or psychodynamic therapy, depending on what fits a particular client best.
Is IFS the same as having multiple personalities? No. IFS uses the language of “parts” as a way of understanding normal internal experience, not a clinical diagnosis.
How long does IFS therapy take? This varies by person and depends on what you're working through — your therapist can discuss a realistic timeline with you directly.
Can IFS be combined with other therapy approaches? Yes. Many of our therapists integrate IFS with EFT, psychodynamic, or trauma-informed approaches depending on what fits your needs.
