What is LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy?
LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is therapy in which your sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationships are respected and supported, not treated as problems to be examined or changed. Affirming care means your therapist understands the realities of being LGBTQIA+, including minority stress, discrimination, and the work of self-acceptance, and partners with you from a place of respect. At Bozeman Therapy & Counseling, we offer a space where you can bring your whole self and focus on whatever you came to work on, without having to explain or defend who you are.
You deserve a space where your identity is affirmed and your whole self is welcome.
What can affirming therapy help with?
Affirming therapy can support LGBTQIA+ adults and couples who are navigating:
- Exploring or understanding sexual orientation or gender identity
- Coming out, or deciding whether, when, and to whom
- Minority stress, discrimination, or experiences of rejection
- Anxiety, depression, or trauma connected to identity or others' reactions
- Relationship, dating, and intimacy questions
- Family, faith, or community tension around identity
- Building self-acceptance, pride, and a more secure sense of self
What is our approach?
Our work is affirming first. We follow your lead on language, identity, and goals, and we never treat your identity as the problem. Grounded in attachment-based, emotion-focused care, we pay attention to the relationships and experiences that shape how safe and seen you feel, including the impact of minority stress. At Bozeman Therapy & Counseling, affirming therapy is provided by Cindy Poulsen, LCSW, a supervising therapist with deep training in attachment-based, trauma-informed care. Together we make space for the full range of what you carry, support self-acceptance and security, and help you move through life and relationships with more steadiness.
What can you expect in sessions?
Therapy offers a confidential, respectful place to be fully yourself. Clients often begin to feel less alone, untangle their own feelings from others' expectations, and build a steadier, kinder relationship with themselves. Whether you are here to focus on identity directly or simply want a therapist who gets it while you work on anxiety, a relationship, or life stress, you can expect to be met with respect and care.
Is this therapy right for me?
This may be a good fit if you want a therapist who is genuinely affirming, whether you are questioning, out, partnered, single, or anywhere on your journey. You do not need to be in crisis or to have an identity-related reason to come. Many LGBTQIA+ clients simply want a space where they do not have to educate their therapist or brace for judgment. If that sounds like what you are looking for, we would be glad to support you.
